UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock came up with the announcement about the launch of Genome UK 2021-22 implementation plan. Following this publication in September 2020, this plan is outlining 27 priority actions for the upcoming year for the genomic healthcare system. It will help the UK to advance its ambition to become “the world’s most advanced genomic healthcare ecosystem.”
This plan is outlining 27 commitments to genomics with 5 key goals. It aims to partner between Genomics England and NHS England/ Improvement for a faster cancer test. It also includes whole-genome sequencing for patients who suffer from rare diseases.
However, it ensures the diverse datasets with screening programs that can benefit the databases. Also, it is looking for the advancement of Our Future Health research program. It is also developing global standards and policies to share genomic health data security.
Genomics England projects which support the implementation of the Genome UK strategy will receive 17M Euro. It came up with the announcement in April. Also, it will issue in part of the increasing data from the ethnic minorities in the cohorts of the particular genomic. It could enhance the diagnosis and the treatment of them in the community of BAME.
The strong standing of the UK in genomics is due in the largest part to the work of Dame Sally Davies. This former chief medical officer of England has founded Genomics England. It has launched the 100000 Genomes Project, which has led to the foundation of the 7 national genomics in England.
Matt Hancock came up with the announcement of the New Variant Assessment Platform. It is a program to enable all scientists from the world to access the genomics laboratories in the UK. It is taking place to bid the sequence of the full genetic code for COVID-19.
Oxford University has also recently partnered with Oracle to launch this Global Pathogen Analysis System or GPAS. It is a digital genomic sequencing platform which is analyzing and comparing the various COVID-19 variants. Also, it is highlighting those who may impose an elevated threat for the population.
This platform intends to help scientists and the government to make faster and more informed decisions for public health. Also, it is helping to mitigate the risk for potentially dangerous variants. There are already plans for the expansion of the capabilities to include all the other pathogens.
